Fall Deep Cleaning Checklist for Los Angeles Homes
Fall in Los Angeles does not leave a pile of leaves at the front door. It leaves dust. This fall deep cleaning checklist is written for that version of the season: what to clean room by room once summer is over, which jobs a professional deep clean covers, which are specialty add-ons, and the three that stay with you because they are maintenance rather than cleaning. Every safety point links to the agency that published it, and the last section covers when to book.
What should be on a fall deep cleaning checklist in Los Angeles?
The short answer is the places that collect what an LA fall blows in, plus the jobs that ready the home for cooler nights and the first guests of the season:
- Window sills, glass, screens and sliding-door tracks
- Ceiling fans, light fixtures and vent covers
- Floors and baseboards in every room
- Rugs, carpet and upholstered furniture
- The kitchen, appliances included
- Bathrooms, top to bottom
- The guest room, before anyone sleeps in it
- Three household jobs: the HVAC filter, the smoke alarms and the direction of the ceiling fans

Why fall, and why dust? The National Weather Service defines a Santa Ana wind as "strong, hot, dust-bearing winds" that "descend to the Pacific Coast around Los Angeles from inland desert regions" (NWS glossary), and its wind safety page says these winds "are most common during the cooler months of the year, occurring from September through May" (National Weather Service). Wind-blown dust settles where air moves through a house: window tracks, sills, screens, vent covers and the floor inside every exterior door. The same page notes that Santa Ana winds "also increase wildfire risk because of the dryness of the winds and the speed at which they can spread a flame across the landscape," which is why an ash section sits further down this list instead of in a footnote.
How do you deep clean each room for fall?
Work from the top of each room down, so the dust you knock loose never lands on something already clean: ceiling fans and fixtures first, then sills and surfaces, then baseboards, then floors. Each item below is marked so you know who it belongs to:
- Deep clean: inside the scope of our deep cleaning service
- Add-on: one of our specialty services, booked alongside the clean
- You: a household job no cleaning visit covers (the three in the next section)
Windows, screens and sliding-door tracks
- Window sills and door frames wiped down. Deep clean ("baseboards, window sills, and door frames" are on the service list).
- Glass inside and out, plus screens and tracks. Add-on: Window Washing covers "windows inside and out, including screens and tracks."
- Before anyone wipes a sliding-door track, vacuum the loose grit out of it first. A wet cloth on dry grit just moves it around as paste.
Ceiling fans, light fixtures and vents
- Fan blades, light fixtures and vent covers dusted. Deep clean: the service includes "dusting and polishing all surfaces and fixtures."
- Air ducts. Add-on, and only when there is a reason. Our specialty team offers air duct cleaning, and we follow the EPA's test for when it makes sense: the agency says to consider it when there is substantial visible mold growth in the system, when ducts are infested with vermin, or when they are "clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers" (EPA). If a register puffs dust when the system starts, that is the sign. If it does not, dusting the vent covers is enough.
Floors, rugs and upholstery
- Floors vacuumed and mopped, and baseboards wiped, in every room. Deep clean ("floor cleaning, vacuuming, and mopping").
- Rugs, carpet and the sofa after a summer of sand, sunscreen and open doors. Add-on: Upholstery and Carpet Care is "professional steam cleaning for carpets, rugs, and furniture using eco-friendly solutions."
Kitchen
- Counters, sink, stovetop and appliances. Deep clean: the service covers "complete kitchen sanitization including appliances."
- If you want the inside of the oven or the refrigerator done, write it in the special instructions when you book, so the team plans the time for it.
Bathrooms
- Toilets, showers, tubs, sinks and mirrors, with the fixtures dusted. Deep clean ("bathroom deep cleaning and disinfection").
- If someone in your home has a specific sensitivity, add it to the special instructions when you book and the team will work around it.
Bedrooms and the guest room
- Surfaces dusted, floors and baseboards done. Deep clean.
- If guests are coming in November or December, do the guest room or the sofa bed in the same pass, so it is not a second job later.
- Swapping summer clothes for fall ones is the natural moment to clear a closet. Add-on: our Organizing Services cover "professional organizing and decluttering."
Which fall jobs are yours, not the cleaner's?
Three jobs belong on a fall list even though no cleaning visit covers them. Each takes minutes.
- Change the HVAC filter before the heat comes on. The South Coast Air Quality Management District advises: "If you have an air conditioning system, change your filter regularly, and keep a high-efficiency filter on hand. Filters labeled 'MERV13' or higher are most effective for removing smoke particles" (South Coast AQMD). The EPA adds that if you upgrade, choose "at least a MERV 13 rating, or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate," that an HVAC technician can tell you what your system takes, and that every filter needs replacing on the manufacturer's schedule (EPA).
- Test the smoke alarms. The U.S. Fire Administration's advice is to "test smoke alarms every month and replace 9-volt smoke alarm batteries at least once every year" (USFA). The clocks go back at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1 this year (NIST), which makes that weekend an easy one to hang the yearly battery change on.
- Reverse the ceiling fans. The Department of Energy suggests reversing the motor "so it rotates clockwise at a low speed," which "will create an updraft which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space." As the DOE puts it, the fan "won't change the temperature in the room, but it will help keep you warm" (Energy.gov). Do it the same day the blades are dusted.
How should you clean up Santa Ana dust or wildfire ash indoors?
Ordinary wind-blown dust needs nothing special: the room-by-room list above is the cleanup. Ash from a wildfire is different, and the South Coast AQMD publishes the method (South Coast AQMD):
- While smoke is in the air, stay inside "with windows and doors closed," and run the air conditioner if you have one, making "sure it has a clean filter."
- Indoors, "use a vacuum with a HEPA filter," or mist lightly with water and then sweep gently with a broom.
- "Don't use leaf blowers," on the patio or anywhere else.
- Protect yourself while you work: a "tight-fitting disposable respirator (such as a N-95 or P-100 respirator mask)," plus goggles, gloves and long sleeves.
- "People with heart or lung diseases, older adults, children, and pregnant women should use special caution around ash."
Once the air has cleared, a deep clean resets everything the ash reached. Wildfire smoke is one of the triggers in our guide to deep cleaning vs regular cleaning, which also explains what each service includes and how often a home needs the deep one.
When should you book a fall deep clean?
Book it in October, before the heat goes on and before the first guests arrive, so the dust that has settled since summer is gone before the house is closed up for the cooler months. We clean homes in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, West LA, Westwood, Brentwood, Santa Monica and Culver City.
Booking online takes about a minute. You set the number of cleaners and hours, the total updates on the screen, and you see it before you pick a date. Our cleaners bring all the cleaning supplies, and you can reschedule or cancel up to 24 hours before the appointment. Add your fall extras, such as the oven, the fridge or a sensitivity in the household, to the special instructions. If you are not completely happy with the clean, we return within 24 hours to make it right at no additional charge. When you are ready, book your fall deep clean.
